Maymont’s history

Maymont got its start with the railway. In 1905, Mackenzie and Mann, the railway construction contractors, built the Canadian Northern Railway through the area, and the village took shape along that line. William Mackenzie, one half of the contracting firm, is the man behind the village's name.

The name comes from his niece, May Montgomery. She asked her uncle to call the village Montgomery, but he told her he couldn't, since a town in Manitoba already carried that name. So he took her first name and the first syllable of her last name and joined them together to make Maymont.

Maymont incorporated as a village on June 24, 1907. Like many communities along the railway in the early 1900s, it had a grain elevator. Today it is one of the few towns in Saskatchewan that still has one.
